Saint-Mammès was a port town used for barge traffic where the Seine and Loing rivers meet.  Alfred Sisley painted several similar views of this stretch of the River Seine, one of which is in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland.  The present work by Bernhard Klene was exhibited in the first London exhibition dedicated to the work of the artist in 1966.
